Dunkins internship

I woke up really early today unfortunately and couldn't fall back asleep. So i went and got a coffee from Dunkins that way I actually wake up. Let me first say, hot coffee is the only way to go. You get a ice coffee and all it is, is ice. I bet you get less coffee than a small if you order a ice. Anyways that's far from the point of this post. When i got back to my room i decided to check my email. Of course I had the daily ten emails about nothing. I saw one about internship with Joel Litvin, and I just figured it was Joel reminding me about the meeting we have today about my BTV internship. But it was actually a forward message about and internship for this spring. The internship would be with a real advertising company and its actually headed by the lady who coined the slogan "America Runs on Dunkin". I honestly forgot what her name is but I guess its not really that important for this post. I thought it was pretty funny that i got this email today sense I literally just got Dunkins. So, im sitting their reading this drinking my coffee and i get to the part that talks about pay for the internship. And of course it says Not paid! Well there goes my interest. My BTV internship isn't paid either, but its also no further than my classes. I and i'm sure many others, would not be able to afford to work at a unpaid internship if it was something you would have to travel back and forth to. I have to pay for a car, insurance, a phone bill. It don't sound like much but it ads up if you don't really have a job. It sounded like a good oppertunity so for all those who can afford to work at a unpaid internship I would strongly suggest it. A internship is a pretty valuable thing; you actually get some true hands on experience with something rather than just reading about it in a book or hearing about it in class. Well anyways I just thought I would talk a little about that. I will leave you with, does America really run on Dunkin? I personally think it should be New England or maybe the east coast. I feel like the rest of the country has their own coffee. Especially the west coast because they have Starbucks. Regardless, it is a pretty good marketing slogan even if its not true or cant be proven. It has a nice ring to it. And I'm... out.

DAISY

I'm a big Brand New fan. For all those who don't know them they are a punk/emo/alternative band. I loved Their last CD, "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me". They just released their 5th studio album, Daisy, on September 22nd. When you first pick up the CD and listen to it, it may take some time to get used to. It defiantly took me a few listens before I really liked the songs. It's very different than what they have come out with in the past, with some experimental guitar parts and strange voice parts. For all those who are fans of Brand New if you try to listen to this CD with a open ear you will like this CD a lot. Like I said, it took some getting used to but I opened up to it and really like the CD a lot. Its very different and that's why its so good. None of their CD's sound very similar besides maybe their first two. Brand New is defiantly experimenting with some new very cool things. Overall i would give this album a 9 out of 10. I cant wait to see what they come out with next.

1.)Vices- Very strange opening song with a lady singing and playing piano to open. Gets heavy with some pretty cool guitar.
2.)Bed- A good song that defiantly sounds like their style. Good bass line and good lyrics.
3.)At the Bottom- The single released a couple months ago. Good catchy song. Defiantly something you can sing along to.
4.)Gasoline- One of my favorite songs on the CD. Good lyrics and some good screaming parts. I love the breakdown in this song and the bass line. Not to mention the creepy outro to the song.
You Stole- Slow song with awesome guitar parts.
5.)Be Gone- Very strange song; more like a break in the music. Experimental guitar with broken words.
6.)Sink- Very catchy song. Sounds like classic Brand New.
7.)Bought a Bride- Another catchy song. Sounds the most like old school Brand New. Awesome guitar solo. Some great lyrics.
8.)Daisy- A slow song with some strange but cool instrumentals. Great lyrics. Pretty catchy song as well.
9.)In a Jar- Another one of my favorites. Good Bass line. Great lyrics. Starts out slow and hits hard with some very interesting instrumentals.
10.)Noro- My favorite song on the album. Starts out slow, but gets heavy at the end and has a awesome guitar solo. Finishes with lady playing the piano and singing like the first song.
11.)At the Bottom(Live in Studio)- I like this version better than the other version. Its acoustic and there's no screaming. So the song feels a bit different but in a good way.

Entourage

I don't watch much TV at all. For the most part the only time i watch TV is on Sunday to watch football. I love football and i don't miss a Patriots game. With the upcoming hockey season and the Red Sox eventual playoff birth i will probably be watchin a little more TV. I will say I am hooked to a couple TV shows. One being South Park and the other being Entourage. I have watched Entourage religiously for the past couple years now and I think the show is hilarious. I just wanted to talk a little bit about the show and why I like it and maybe some people can respond back with why they enjoy the show.
Entourage for one is the ultimate guy show. Four guys from Queens New York move out to L.A. and basically live the life which we all wish we could be living. This is probably the main reason we all enjoy the show. How much fun would it be to move to L.A. and have no cares in the world. Secondly from day one this show has done a great job with characterization. Every character is a little bit different and brings something different to each and every episode. The characters feel like real people that have know each other for a long period of time they way they joke around with one another. Being a guy, i defiantly enjoy the interactions of the four friends when their together. It reminds me a lot of me and my friends. For all those who do watch the show you will understand what I am about to say. In the first few seasons their usually was some sort of problem every episode that was resolved or figured out by the end of the episode. But now the episodes have changed a bit and the story lines are more on going through the episodes. I think i liked the old way better, but i still enjoy the show a lot.
Last Sundays episode was very good which made me thing i should write a post on the show and why I liked it so much. So for all those who are going to respond, did you like the old seasons better of the new ones? Whats you favorite episode? I think i have overall enjoyed the old seasons better and I think my favorite episode might be the Vegas one or the few that have Gary Busey in them.

The Maltese Falcon...

In my Monday film class we watched another old movie. This one actually came out right before Casablanca. It came out in 1941 and its again another Humphrey Bogart movie. This movie was directed by John Huston. This one was called The Maltese Falcon.
I want to tell you a little what I thought about the movie. Its considered to be one of the first Film Noir movies. Film Noir tends to touch on unease with society; it has lots of odd camera angles, shadows, and low key lighting. A lot of camera angles tend to be looking up on the people in the action of the movie. Which is odd and presents the question who's eyes are we seeing all the action from? Could it be a small child or even a pet? There was also a lot of over the shoulder shots and a ton of closeups. This movie relied heavily on the actors and actresses expressions. Once i again, i really enjoyed the movie. These older movies are quite good because the actors and actresses have been very talented. Today's movie stars for the most part don't seem to have as much talent because there's so many things that can be done with movies to make the actors and actresses look better. For instance, a action movie can have a lot of great action scenes but maybe not great acting and it would still be considered a good film.
Anyways back to the Maltese Falcon. The movie was very complicated and at times it was a bit hard to follow. The movie is a murder mystery. Miles Archer a private detective and a Englishman Mr. Thursby who Archer was following are both found dead. Its up to Archer's partner Sam Spade to find out who were the killers. There are many players in the movie and all the while there's a whole other story about these players trying to find a golden falcon which is supposedly worth a lot of money. Throughout the movie the cops have Sam pinned as suspect, but in the end Sam is the one not the cops who figures out both murders. The movie ends as Sam tells the cops everything that happened. For a while I thought Sam might have been involved in the murders. It was kind of confusing, but regardless it kept my attention through the whole movie. Once again i would totally suggest this movie to anyone. I'm beginning to like Humphrey Bogart a lot as an actor. He is very talented, I hope we watch another one of his movies sometime in the Semester. Well I'm off for now.

BTV and the Newspaper

This past weekend was kind of a relaxed weekend for me at BTV because my boss was gone for a week so i didn't work on the football game on Saturday. Instead I met with Sam Baumgarten for that cross country event as I explained in a earlier blog post. Friday I met with Sam and I did a short little interview with him on camera to explain the cross country program he runs every weekend and Saturday morning i went over to the even and shot some footage of the kids running the in the trails. It was pretty easy I didn't do anything too crazy. I'm sure when its all put together they will put clips of the event in with interview. It will be on air this week on BTV so it will be interesting to see how it comes out. I think i got some pretty good stuff so it should be good.
I was over at BTV today and I set up the studio for a musical act. It was two acoustic guitarists and one singer. They were pretty good. My boss Jeff showed me how to switch back and forth between the cameras during the production so that was cool. I think I'm getting a hang of things each and every day I'm there.
As i was over at BTV my buddy texted me and asked me to write an article for the newspaper for this week. I was pretty pumped because its about the Bruins and I'm a big hockey fan. This will be my first article for the paper. I jumped on a little late, I wish i had done it all these years while I was at school because it would look great on a resume. Well I'm off to do some other homework. Talk to you soon.

NHL 10

So Tuesday was the official release of NHL 10. I was extremely pumped to go pick it up because for a few years now its been one of my favorite games. For all those who are hockey fans you should defiantly give this game a try. For all those who are interested in getting this game i wan to give you a quick review.
There are a couple new modes, but I haven't really got around to checking them out yet, but so far it has been a big hit in my room. The animations have been revamped and are better than last years. There haven't been many stupid goals like in last years game. The passing this year has been tweaked and its quite a bit harder than the past years. You need to hold down the trigger for harder passes and there's a lot more aiming involved. It may be a little bit harder but in the end it actually is quite helpful once you get the hang of it because its much easier to pass the puck around in the offensive zone.
A key addition to this years game which the game producers really made a big deal about was the fighting and physical aspect of hockey. In this years game you have the opportunity to drop the gloves a lot more than you ever had in the past. It's a pretty good fighting mechanic and who ever actually wins the fight gains energy for their team. So, their is an actual point to fighting. You can also choose not to fight if someone picks a fight with you. The checking this year has been tweaked also. Their are not as many ridiculous checks now where guys go flying which i think is good. But, i think they may have went a little too soft. For an example Zedeno Chara cant seem to knock anyone over. The guy is a monster he should able to knock people over rather than them just bouncing off of him.
The last thing i will says is the game feels quite a bit slower that last years. You can easily fix this my adjusting the game speed up. The only thing i wish they would add is the ability of star players to stand out a bit more than the other players. Overall i think they did a great job with the game.It is a bit improved for last years. Next year i will look for them to focus a bit more on the game play rather than the game modes. Still its a very good game and a great multilayer game for you and your buddies to enjoy for a long time.

My First Lone Assignment

My Boss over at BTV is gone for the week filming at the Big E. So, he set me up from my first lone camera shoot and interview with Sam Baumgarten, Professor and chair of The Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion, and Leisure Studies. I honestly don't know too much about this event that I'm going to be filming but i guess ill find out when i meet with Sam.
But anyways this Saturday there is a Kids Cross Country race from 9:00-10:00 A.M. This should be a easy first assignment hopefully. Its only a hour long and I'm pretty much open to what ever he's looking for so i think it should go well. I'm actually meeting with him Friday to do a short interview so hopefully after that i will have some more insight about what this actual event is all about.
Jeff put me in contact with Sam a few days ago and we have been emailing back and forth about times and meeting places. I think this assignment has been pretty helpful so far because I'm doing things on my own and figuring out how to be responsible and manage my time and not just goof off. That's all i pretty much know for now. Hopefully the two shoots go well and Sam likes what i shoot for him. My first news story; I'm pretty pumped! I will probably write later how the two shoots end up going. I'm out for now, Later.

Casablanca...

So I'm in this film class this semester to finish up my writing/speaking intensive classes. We all know how hard it is to find one of these classes right? Last semester I took a art history class thinking it was fulfilling my last credit for writing/speaking intensive but of course not. So now I'm in this class, which i guess isn't that bad because i love movies. But i have never really had to critique a movie very thoroughly so i hope its not too bad. Were going to be watching a lot of older movies which a lot of people consider classics. Which fine by me because black and white or older style movies don't really turn me off. I know some people dislike them and would prefer a new movie but these movies are considered classics for a reason so maybe you should give them a chance. Anyways, we watched our first full movie yesterday in class.
The first movie we watched was Casablanca. It's a pretty old movie. It was shot in 1941 in i guess a little over a week and it appeared on the big screen in 1942. So for all us history buffs, it came out during World War II. I think its crazy that a movie that is considered a classic came out during this time and was a big hit. I thought the whole world would be too rapped up in the fighting to give a hoot about it. The director of the movie is Michael Curtiz and it stars Humphrey Bogart. I have heard of both men but I'm honestly not too familiar with them. I actually thought about watching this movie a couple times on my own, but i never did. So i watched the movie and i really liked it. It defiantly should be considered a classic film. The director did a really great job with all the shots and the way he told the story through each scene. The black and white didn't bother me at all either. And even though it was in black and white i think the movie has a lasting appeal even to today. I think the reason why this movie is considered a classic is because after watching it, it didn't seem out dated and old fashion. It could have been made this past year and people would of really loved it. So i really liked the movie, everyone should see it if they get the chance. I know i didn't really say much about it, but it has a little something for everyone in it. Well that's it for today, see Casablanca!

BTV

So I don't know if i really introduced myself yet. My name is Kurt Mitchell. I am a senior at BSC. School has gone by so fast so for all you underclassmen, enjoy it while it lasts.
So i was trying to think of something to write about today that related back to Media and then all of a sudden it popped in my head. I forgot all about my internship. This semester i have an internship over at BTV. For all of you who don't know what BTV is its Bridgewater's local access channel, channel 9. Last weekend i got my first chance to get my hands dirty. I worked at the Bears football game on Saturday. I was on one of the three cameras that we were using for the broadcast. The Day before i went to the stadium and set up the tripods for the cameras and all the audio and video wires that way it was all set up before the game and we weren't tripping over people. I didn't really know how to do much but i think i learned pretty fast i got the hang of quite a few things. I can pretty much set up and take down the cameras on my own and learned some of the ins and outs of a live broadcast. It was a great learning experience and i think its only going to get better as the semester goes on. For all those interested in watching the games live they are on the local access station and on bscbeasrs.com as live broadcasts. Or you could just make a trip down to the field. I will probably keep you posted through the semester on how my internship is going for those who may be interested in doing an internship there at some point. Plus it gives me something else to write about as well. Well I'm signing out. Talk to you soon.

District 9

First of all i just want to say that i love movies and try to see a lot of them. I just recently saw District 9 this past weekend. And i must say, i was very impressed. The trailer for this movie just made it look great and it actually lived up to it.
So this movie was really good and i want to tell you why you should go see it. For one, i heard this movie didn't have a huge budget and knowing that and seeing the movie i was pretty impressed what they came up with for CGI for this movie. Things looked pretty good. The alien ship also reminded me of Independence Day also another great alien flick. Secondly, this movie was written and directed very well. The movie had no noticeable faces but that didn't seem to matter because it was just a good movie regardless if there was a well know cast or not. They filmed the movie almost as if it was documentary so i thought that was pretty interesting. And that actual story of the movie wasn't anything i thought it would be. This is why the movie was so good. It was just a story of the humans fighting off the big bad aliens, it had a lot of depth. The film also made you feel for the aliens which i thought was great because of how ugly they were. Ya I'm sorry that might of been a little mean but they really were quite unattractive. The camera angles and shots were all really good. There were a lot of shots done by hand without a tripod which made you feel like you were right there in the action. Last But not least this movie had a pretty solid ending and maybe a hint that their might be a sequel. Overall good job Peter Jackson, again. If your looking for a sci-fi thriller with a good story line and some great action, this is a movie for you. Maybe you wont go see it because you don't like sci-fi movies but i think you should go anyway because this ones a lot different.

Random Thoughts...

Its crazy to think at how much the world has changed in such little time. We are in a age of information with all kinds of new technology all around us. The internet has made it possible for us to have information at our finger tips at any point in the day. Most cell phones these days even have some sort of an internet browser for when a computer is not near by. No longer is TV and the the newspaper the number one technology for information from the media. And as I was saying before, this is all fairly new technology for the most part. The internet didn't really come into play until 1996; that was only 13 years ago. Things have changed pretty fast and at any point in the day we can go on the internet and be informed what is happening on in the world.
I don't really have any plans for this blog; No one central theme. I will say pretty much what comes to mind and what i am interested in. Hopefully i can keep people interested and reading.

Friday, September 4, 2009

This is my first post. I don't really know what to write about because this is my first week of classes, but this blog will eventually have some useful information.
